People often use the two terms as if they mean the same thing, then get surprised by the difference in price and in the work involved. They are not the same. Getting the choice right early saves money and avoids a room that does not do what you hoped.
What the difference actually is
A walk-in shower is an open or low-threshold enclosure with its own tray, sitting inside a normal, dry bathroom floor. The rest of the room stays dry. It is the more common choice and usually the simpler job.
A wet room goes further: the whole floor, or a large zone of it, is tanked and waterproofed, the floor is laid to fall towards a drain, and there is often no tray and no lip at all. The shower area and the room become one waterproof space.
Which suits which home
- Tight terraced bathrooms (think Bedminster, Southville, parts of Fishponds): a wet room can genuinely help, because losing the tray and the enclosure frees up floor space and makes a small room feel larger. Level access also removes the step, which matters more than people expect.
- Family bathrooms where you still want a bath: a walk-in shower alongside the bath is usually the sensible answer, and a full wet room is overkill.
- Accessibility: for anyone who struggles with steps, a level-access wet room is often the right long-term call, with a seat and grab rails planned in from the start.
- Older Bristol floors: period timber floors and awkward levels can make a wet room more involved, because the fall has to be formed and the structure worked around. It is very doable, it just needs someone who has done it before.
The honest trade-offs
A wet room costs more, because tanking, drainage and floor work all add labour. Done properly it lasts for decades; done cheaply it is the job most likely to leak, so it is not the place to save money. A walk-in shower is usually cheaper and quicker, and for many homes it is exactly right.
There is no universal answer. The best choice depends on your room, your floor, who uses it and your budget, which is why we would rather look at the space than guess.
Talk it through
If you are weighing the two up, the quickest way to a clear answer is to have someone who fits both come and look at the room. We will tell you honestly which suits your home and why, and put a free written quote to it. See walk-in and accessible bathrooms or wet room installation, or just ask us.
